Cuteness

Newborns only have two modes: On -

- and off.

When she sleeps, all is calm.

Another nap just when Daddy got home from work. I can never be too tired to take more photos of our little Anouk. Mommy said "I already took some photos of the same pose." (That's the above photo that Mommy took)

When they told us we have to choose an infant seat carefully, they weren't kidding. Look how small she is in this infant seat. Canadian newborn clothes are too big for our hapa (half-Japanese/half-European, originally from Hawaiian meaning half-Hawaiian) baby.

Family meets the new arrival

Grandma Lenka. Grandma was at the delivery, helping Saori and also taking photos. The one of Anouk just after birth is her photo. (thanks Mom!)

Obaasan with Anouk. That means Grandma in Japanese. She was at the delivery, too, helping Saori.

But what about Mommy? Here she is.

I barely ever get photos of me, so I'm not too picky. See how tiny Anouk is in my hands? I'm still getting used to holding a little newborn.

Finally a baby name!

We decided to name her Anouk. I always liked the name; after Anouk Aimée. Saori liked the name, too - in the end she convinced me it was the right name. The name is actually French and Dutch. What we like about it is the sound and that it isn't obviously from any one culture.

In Japanese her name is あぬく(anuku), it could mean "looking-up" or "warm".

We also found out it means something in Hindi: "pretty" and it's used as a name, too.

Peko's first day

Ok - she still is called Peko. We were almost decided on a name - but after 4 almost sleepless nights we had trouble thinking about something so important. Besides, we were just learning how to change diapers.

Birth

Her first moment in the world. We didn't have a name for her yet, so we still called her by her nickname "Peko". She was born on March 25, 2006 at 03:16 (that's AM in American) This was just 4 days before her due date.

Sarah, the nurse was cleaning Peko. She was just learning to breathe.

She weighed in at 2.78 kg or 6 lbs 2 oz. Her head was 32 cm in circumference and 48.5 long. For a mother Saori's size, our baby was the perfect size, but smaller than the average Canadian baby. In Japan Peko was the average size.

Just 20 minutes old - already hugging Mommy. She also started to breast-feed, but I was too busy being happy to take photos.

Before the birth

Saori's belly while the baby was moving down into the birth position. We were surprised by the sudden change in her belly shape.

In between contractions there wasn't any pain, it was as usual.

But then a contraction came - each ten minutes getting closer together for two nights.
